Day 1 - Arrival in LA.

Day 1 - May 15 -
Flight landed at LAX at 12:10 PM local time.
The journey will start tomorrow.

Spent the day negotiating LA traffic traveling to Orange, CA to visit with
Ginny's sister Loretta in her new home. Also, keeping in touch with the
folks back in the Poughkeepsie area to hear how things were after the
violent storm in the afternoon.  Massive   power outages, downed trees,
school closings, etc.  We made the right choice by departing today, instead
of  Wednesday.

We did hear Tuesday evening from friends and our next door neighbor that all was OK.

We met Ginny's sister Loretta at her new home in Orange, CA. Here's a look at a typical

After catching up, we went to dinner at one of Loretta's favorite place, and ours as well: Rosine's

    Hopefully a neighbor has let you know that you have no damages at your home. What are driving

Day 5 - The Grand Canyon - Updated with additional photos 6/9

Prior to heading to the canyon, the hotel put on a comedic wild west show.  It was humorous but don't expect to see in on Broadway. The hotel runs a train to the Grand Canyon. We rode in the top of a car with a glass dome.  Drinks of all kinds were available, as well as breakfast snacks. A singing cowboy also roamed from car to car.  Boarding the train. breakfast beverages    Scenes from the train on the ride to the canyon.     Scenes at the Grand Canyon    On the return from the canyon, some of the actors from the morning's showed up riding horseback beside the train.  A few minutes later, they came through cars to "rob" the passengers (read that as "collect tips").

Day 4 - Travel from Needles, CA to Williams, AZ - Updated with additional photos 6/10

We spent some time in Needles before heading out toward Williams. Needles was the boyhood home of the town's most famous resident, Charles Shultz, whose time there inspired the creation of Snoopy's brother Spike. Ginny found a new friend Needles is know for murals on many buildings in town.  Some examples the King Woodstock and Spike ONE OF THE HARVEY HOUSES WAS IN WHAT NOW HOLDS THE AMTRAK WAITING ROOM Amtrak stops in Needles but only between 11PM and 1AM This fountain is in the front entrance of the refurbished building. Day 7 - Gallup NM to Santa Fe NM - UPDATED 6/11

Today we tried to follow the old Route 66 - many wrong turns, retrace & recover and try again. The final hour was in a torrential downpour. We finally arrived safely late afternoon.  The locals said they hadn't had rain in months.  Lucky us. Starting out from Gallup, we visited the Cultural Center which is housed in a building that had housed one of the Harvey House hotels. It has a museum with many exhibits. Here are a couple: Kachina Dolls by a local Zuni artist A Memorial to the Navajo Code Talkers Driving Route 66 has pluses and minuses. Minus: The speed limit is typically 20 or more mph lower than the interstate. Pluses: There are virtually no trucks or motor homes on the road. The interstate is full of them Quite often, we were the only car on the road for miles. At slower speeds, you have a better opportunity to appreciate the scenery.
