Day 10 - Amarillo TX to Oklahoma City OK - Revised 6/12

On our way out of Amarillo, we stopped at another of the original Harvey House Hotels. This one was behind locked gates so only a distant photo was possible.
The roads on today's drive were mostly isolated; some not paved. No large towns.

Below, these types of silos were seen frequently through our travels in Texas and Oklahoma.
Then we came across the famous (or perhaps infamous) Bug Farm:  VWs buried nose first in the ground.
We stopped for lunch in a small Texas town: McLean. Few of the original stores are still in business. There is a museum, but it was not open when we were there.
As is the case with many of the towns in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, murals were visible everywhere. Here is a collection of some of the better ones.
While the stores were vacant, the library was open and Ginny went in to meet the librarians.

Below is a pony bridge in Geary OK called the William H. Murphy Pony Bridge.  Dedicated in 1933, this brightly painted pony bridge of 38 arches (19 on each side) is nearly 4000 feet long spanning the South Canadian River.  The West end was a location in "Grapes of Wrath" starring Henry Fonda, where Grandpa dies and is buried. (The bridge had been there only six years at that time). The term "pony" comes from the pony trusses used in the construction.
More of the scenery along the road as we continued on to OKC.

Occasionally we encountered a different types of moving roadblock. We had to wait awhile until the rig moved to the side to allow traffic to go by.
We arrived late in the day in OKC. Our hotel was immediately adjacet to the Chesapeake Energy Arena, home of the OKC Thunder.  Across the street in the Convention Center, an enormous graduation ceremony was taking place.
